The Australian Broadcasting Corporation has upgraded its online and mobile information sites in Canberra, adding new news and features as part of a national rollout.
ABC Head of Newsgathering, Craig McMurtrie said that now when visitors came to abc.net.au/news in the Canberra region they would receive comprehensive local news and features, including the best stories from ABC Local Radio, ABC Open and ABC Rural.
Mr McMurtrie said that was in addition to the usual full ABC coverage of national and international news.
He said a new location service had been introduced, which automatically redirected Canberrans to the new homepage tailored specifically for them.
Mr McMurtrie said people could choose to opt out of the localised service and continue with the national ABC News edition if they wished.
"The ABC News localisation project is providing more quality local news in every State and Territory for online and on mobile audiences," he said.
"Visitors to the ABC News website in the ACT, can now access much more local news content and features. They will continue to get the big national and international news stories, but can also opt to have the local news feed more prominent on their home page."
Mr McMurtrie said the new ABC News location-based online service began in Western Australia in April and was launched in Victoria on 28 May.
He said the other local editions would continue to be rolled out in the next couple of months, with the project due to be complete by mid-August.
"We have been building our digital offering around the country and have been expanding our network of digital producers and reporters in the last few months," Mr McMurtrie said.
"We are really committed to providing and delivering audiences more quality local online news content."
